… you just need to find the questions.

I’m sure you’ve heard of it – Big Data has been a buzz-word in the business world for the past 4 or so years now. Big data is all data; every byte of your digital footprint and every grain of information recorded on or offline.  We’ve honed our skills to mine, predict, analyse, visualise, clean and accumulate Big Data, but what’s next?

Big Data has the power to provide us with every answer imaginable. We just need to get better at effectively using it – defining the questions without getting lost in the volume. It’s the Information Age and we have more data to analyse than we know what to do with. Data has out-grown our current metric measurement; we have no official term beyond a yottabyte (10^24). In 2016 we’ll see companies supplying users with tools that simplify and analyse data.  Big data sets will become easier to access and interpret (even if you’re not a data analyst). With this step towards a human-centric interaction with Big Data, it is more important than ever for businesses (big and small) to grasp and fully unlock Big Data’s potential.

More data has been recorded in the last 2 years than since the human race began – ways of capturing, using and storing data are increasingly sophisticated.

Some of the world’s cities, industries and corporate giants are adopting some new, creative and adaptive ways to use this free resource. The fashion Industry is using big data to clearly predict customer’s preferences, while wearables like Fitbits and Nike+ aid a customer in collecting their own data that is easily digestible for consumers. But it doesn’t end there – data analytics in New York are predicting buildings most at-risk of fire to help prioritise fire-fighter’s time, while the corporate giants out there are answering customer queries before they ask them through data mining and interpretation.

Data is aptly named our “new oil” – a resource being mined for its glorious potential. The main difference being that data certainly isn’t finite (or destroying the earth) like it’s petrochemical predecessor. The applications of such enormous data sets are imperative to transforming your customer’s experience. To keep up with our fast-changing business environment, it is imperative to feed your User Experience Design with accurate, relevant data.

Big Data is everywhere, you just need to learn how to use it.
